Smallmouth anyone?

Hey i'm an average teenage kid just looking for some serious smallmouth fishing. A couple of weeks ago my dad and i were taking some casts just below the I-91 bridge when my dad hooked into a big one. Well when he got it to shore this thing was a solid 5lbs. ( look in the photo gallery. ). I mean this thing was about 21 to 24 inches long. So then the next day we went down there again and wham another 5 pounder, and it wasn't the same one. The only thing was that we weren't using lures we were using shiners. I know for all you tournament fisherman out there you would consider that cheating but it was still great to see these beautiful fish. But anyways I was wondering if the smallmouth in the Enfield to Windsor locks part of the river are on their beds yet? Oh yeah buy the way those smallies were caught and released.

From the Crazy smally dude.

Well, first of all that is awesome that you let them go! Because you are right they are spawning and they are on the beds. You are fishing an area that most anglers only get to read about. I’ve fished for bass all over the state, and when I used to go to Texas every year all those Texans could talk about was coming north and fishing for that real mean small mouth that they only read about. So cherish what you have and keep letting them go to be there another day.

To answer your question about using a shiner man what I would give to be able to use a shiner on the tournament days when you can’t by a bite, but your right it is very illegal to fish with live bait during a bass tournament. To make me feel good to know that young guys like you are out there and respecting the fish and its habitat. Because we are the only ones that will, for the next generation of anglers. Next time you’re in the shop make sure to say hi, I’d like to shake your hand. Will see you out there. Mark
